Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Ekadashi is one of the most sacred observances in the Vedic calendar. Among the twenty-four Ekadashis observed every year, Yogini Ekadashi is especially glorified for its power to free one from sinful reactions and inspire sincere devotional service. More than a ritual fast, Yogini Ekadashi is an opportunity to purify the heart, deepen our remembrance of Lord Krishna, and advance on the path of bhakti.
Why is Yogini Ekadashi Celebrated?
Yogini Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) in the month of Ashadha. According to the scriptures, observing this Ekadashi with faith helps cleanse one's consciousness and strengthens devotion to the Supreme Lord. Devotees dedicate the day to chanting the holy names, hearing Krishna-katha, reading sacred scriptures, and rendering loving service to Lord Vishnu.
The Story of Yogini Ekadashi
The significance of Yogini Ekadashi is described in the Brahma Vaivarta Purana through the story of Hemamali.
Hemamali served Kubera, the treasurer of the demigods, by collecting fresh flowers every day for the worship of Lord Shiva. One day, overwhelmed by his attachment to his beautiful wife, Hemamali neglected his service and failed to return with the flowers on time. Angered by this negligence, Kubera cursed him to fall from heaven, suffer from leprosy, and be separated from his wife.
Filled with regret, Hemamali wandered on Earth until he met the great sage Markandeya Rishi. After hearing his sincere repentance, the sage advised him to observe Yogini Ekadashi by fasting, chanting the holy names of Lord Vishnu, and engaging in devotional service.
Hemamali faithfully observed the Ekadashi vrata, and by the mercy of Lord Vishnu, he was freed from the curse, regained his health, and was reunited with his wife. This pastime reminds us that even after making mistakes, sincere repentance and devotional service can attract the Lord's mercy.
