The eleventh day of each lunar fortnight in the Vedic calendar is known as Ekadashi. The upcoming Ekadashi, called Utpanna Ekadashi, falls in the dark fortnight of the month of Margashirsha. It is also known as Uttpatti Ekadashi. This sacred day is marked by a beautiful divine pastime that gave it its very name. Both ‘Utpanna’ and ‘Uttpatti’ signify the birth or appearance of a special divine personality.
In the age of Satya-Yuga, when the demon Mura grew in tremendous power and defeated the demigods, including Indra, Agni, Vayu and others, the situation of the heavenly beings became very serious. The demigods approached the Supreme Lord Vishnu for deliverance, and with great compassion He took up the battle against Mura. After a thousand celestial years of an intense combat, when the Lord withdrew to a secluded cave in Badarikashrama to rest, at that moment the demon taking advantage, attacked to kill Him. Out of the Lord’s own transcendental potency there manifested a beautiful young girl, His internal energy, who challenged and vanquished Mura, restoring peace to the universe.
In gratitude for her service, Lord Vishnu, being pleased, granted the young girl’s request, that the eleventh day in every lunar fortnight be observed as the most auspicious day for the Lord’s devotees. One who follows this fast with devotion is freed from the sins accumulated over lifetimes and attains the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu. Thus, the divine pastime of Mura’s defeat and the Lord’s merciful granting of this boon through His transcendental energy reveal the true glory of Ekadashi. It signifies not merely abstaining from food, but actually the loving service to the Supreme Lord. Lord Krishna personally narrated Arjuna this beautiful pastime and explained the spiritual benefits it brings to those who observe it.
Ekadashi is a day for deepening one’s spiritual practices and cultivating devotion to the Supreme Lord. Devotees are encouraged to wake up early in the morning to chant the holy names of Lord Krishna, engage in hearing about His divine pastimes, and participate in congregational kirtans. On this sacred day, one should completely abstain from consuming grains, legumes, and pulses. In addition, engaging in various services of the Lord, such as preparing food offerings and deity worship, offering Tulasi majaris, and lighting lamps, is of great importance. Associating with and serving the devotees of the Lord, as well as performing acts of charity, are considered especially meritorious and spiritually uplifting on Ekadashi.
Observing Utpanna Ekadashi with devotion brings immense spiritual benefits. One who fasts, chants the holy names of Lord Vishnu, and engages in His service on this day, is freed from sins, attains great happiness, and ultimately reaches the eternal abode of the Lord. Even hearing about the glories of Ekadashi grants purification and spiritual elevation, making it a day of unmatched merit and divine mercy.
On the auspicious occasion of Uttpanna Ekadashi, kindly offer your generous contribution and receive the boundless mercy of Lord Vishnu.
