The Power of Saphala Ekadashi

Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, has revealed that a sincere Ekadashi fast pleases Him more than even the greatest fire sacrifices or acts of charity. Especially dear to the Lord, Ekadashi is considered the best of all fasting days. The upcoming Ekadashi, Saphala Ekadashi, falls on the dark fortnight of Pausha (December–January) in the Vedic calendar.

Story of Lumpaka’s Transformation

An inspiring story of a prince named Lumpaka is associated with the observance of Saphala Ekadashi. Long ago, the saintly King Mahishmata ruled the city of Champavati and had four sons, the eldest being Lumpaka. Sadly, Lumpaka was involved in sinful activities such as illicit relationships, gambling, and associating with prostitutes. His behaviour caused great distress to his father and even led to the loss of royal wealth. He openly insulted the Devas, Brahmanas, and Vaishnavas, and seeing his continued degradation, the king finally exiled him to the forest. Filled with anger, Lumpaka survived by stealing at night and hunting animals during the day.

Unaware of its sanctity, he lived under an old banyan tree dear to Lord Narayana. On the Dashami night of Pausha, the intense cold kept him awake, and the next day, Saphala Ekadashi, he was unable to hunt and could only collect fallen fruits. Feeling helpless, he cried out to Lord Sri Hari and offered the fruits to Him. In this way, Lumpaka unknowingly observed the complete Ekadashi fast and remained awake throughout the night. The Lord, pleased by Lumpaka’s humble offering, lovingly accepted it.

The next morning, a celestial voice declared that the Lord was pleased with him. By the merit of Saphala Ekadashi, Lumpaka was freed from his past sins, restored to his princely form, and became a pure devotee of Lord Hari. Returning to Champavati, he ruled righteously and ultimately attained the Supreme Abode of the Lord. Lumpaka’s life proves that Ekadashi can purify even the most fallen soul. And that the Lord lovingly accepts sincere offerings.

How to Observe Saphala Ekadashi

Saphala Ekadashi is a sacred opportunity to deepen one’s devotion and spiritual practices. Devotees rise early, chant the holy names of Lord Krishna, and spend the day hearing and remembering His divine pastimes. Observing the fast by avoiding grains, pulses, and legumes, helps keep the mind calm and centered on the Lord. Offering Tulasi leaves, preparing bhoga, performing deity worship, lighting lamps, and participating in kirtans fill the day with devotion, while serving devotees and giving charity greatly enhance the spiritual merit of this vrata.

On the auspicious occasion of Saphala Ekadashi, kindly offer your generous contribution and receive the boundless mercy of Lord Krishna. Please visit: https://www.iskconbhiwandi.org/annadaan

Benefits of Observing Saphala Ekadashi

The benefits of Saphala Ekadashi are immense, greater than those of grand sacrifices or pilgrimages. Even an unintentional observance, as seen in Lumpaka’s story, purifies the devotee, and simply hearing its glories grants merit equal to great fire sacrifices, making this a powerful day of the Lord’s mercy.

When to Observe

Saphala Ekadashi reminds us that even the smallest act of devotion, when offered with sincerity, can bring a person closer to the Lord’s grace. This year, Saphala Ekadashi falls on 16th December 2025, and the fast is to be broken on Dwadashi, the next day, 17th December 2025 between 07:05 am and 10:45 am for Mumbai. May this sacred observance bring auspiciousness, devotion, and spiritual fulfilment to all devotees.
