The Holy Month of Kartik

Introduction to Kartik Maas

Kartik Maas, also known as Damodar Month, is considered the holiest and most rewarding month of the Vedic year. Scriptures glorify it as the time when even the smallest acts of devotion multiply a thousandfold. The presiding Deity of this sacred month is Srimati Radharani, and by Her mercy, Lord Krishna becomes easily pleased.

During Kartik, devotees take vows, perform austerities, and increase their devotional activities to please Sri Sri Radha-Damodar. It is a time to deepen one’s relationship with the Lord, purify the heart, and awaken pure love for Krishna. The observance of Kartik Maas adds a great boost to one’s devotional life.

Festivals during Kartik Maas

Kartik Maas is the most celebrated month of the Vedic calendar, filled with sacred festivals and holy observances that offer daily opportunities to deepen devotion.

Damodar Lila – Krishna’s playful pastimes with Mother Yashoda shows that the Lord can only be bound by the combination of our effort and His mercy. The Damodar Lila describes how little Krishna was tied by Mother Yashoda to a wooden mortar after He broke a butter pot in anger. Devotees remember this sweet pastime by lighting ghee lamps and signing the Damodarastakam with love during the month of Kartik.

Annakut (Govardhan Lila) – Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill to protect the villagers from Indra’s torrential rains, and this day is remembered by offering a mountain of food to Krishna in gratitude for His mercy.

Gopashtami – Krishna, stepping past His childhood, began tending cows, for the first time.

Dhanteras – It is the first day of Diwali. Celebrated to honor Lord Dhanvantari, an incarnation of the Supreme Lord and founder of Ayurveda.

Deepotsava – the return of Lord Rama, reminding devotees of the triumph of light over darkness.

Lakshmi Puja – Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Narayana, acknowledging that true prosperity comes through serving Them together.

Tulsi–Shaligram Vivah – Commemorates the sacred marriage of Tulsi Devi and Lord Vishnu in His Shaligram form.

Bhishma Panchaka and Kartik Purnima – The concluding days, marked by fasting and prayers, bring immense merit and celebrate Krishna’s pastimes, especially the Rasa-lila.

How to Observe Kartik Maas?

During this sacred month, devotees are encouraged to wake up early in the morning, offer ghee lamps daily while reciting Damodarashtakam, engage in the congregational chanting of the holy names, and hear from Srimad Bhagavatam. Serving prasadam, honouring Tulsi Devi, practicing charity, and associating with devotees helps one cultivate humility and devotion. It is also recommended to do a pilgrimage to the holy Dhaam of the Lord. Devotees travel to Vrindavan and Mayapur during this auspicious Kartik month. Simple acts like lighting lamps, distributing prasadam, and observing fasts on special days of Kartik bring immense spiritual benefit, as these practices purify the heart and increase attachment to the Lord.
