Sarva Bhuteshu Hitah: The Compassion of Lord Rama

Continuing our reflections on the divine qualities of Lord Rama, we come to Sarva Bhūteṣu Hitaḥ—one who is the well-wisher of all living beings.

During His time in the forest, Lord Rama came across Ahalya, who had been living in the form of a stone due to a curse. As described in the Ramayana, the moment Lord Rama entered the hermitage and His feet touched that place, Ahalya was freed from her condition and restored to her original form.

While searching Mother Sita after her abduction, Lord Rama visited the Ashrama of Shabari, who had been waiting for His arrival for many years. When He arrived, she offered Him fruits with great devotion. 

Lord Rama accepted them with affection, valuing the sincerity with which they were offered.

In both these pastimes, Lord Rama extends His grace without distinction. Whether it is delivering Ahalya from her long-standing suffering or accepting the simple offering of Shabari, His dealings reflect a heart that is open to all.

This is the essence of Sarva Bhūteṣu Hitaḥ—to act for the welfare of all, without considering external differences.

The teachings of the Bhagavad Gita explain that when one lives with devotion and sees all living beings in connection with the Lord, a natural sense of compassion develops. 

Through bhakti, the heart becomes purified, and one learns to act with kindness and goodwill towards all.

In Lord Rama’s life, this quality is seen consistently—His presence uplifts, and His actions bring benefit to everyone He comes in contact with.
