Rukmini Dwadashi: The Divine Appearance of Srimati Rukmini Devi

Rukmini Dwadashi, falling on 28th April, is the auspicious appearance day of Srimati Rukmini Devi, the eternal consort of Lord Sri Krishna and the first amongst his eight primary wives. On this sacred occasion, devotees discuss her unparalleled love, surrender, and unflinching faith in the Lord.
Rukmini Devi appeared as the daughter of King Bhishmaka, the King of Vidarbha. From a very young age, she possessed extraordinary beauty, virtue, and devotion. Although she had never personally met Lord Krishna, her heart was deeply attracted to Him simply by hearing about His divine qualities, pastimes, and unmatched character from sages and devotees.
This is one of the most profound lessons in devotional life, that the devotion for the Supreme Lord begins by hearing.
Love Through Hearing
Rukmini Devi’s love for Lord Krishna was completely based on spiritual realization. By hearing about Him, she became fully convinced that Krishna alone was her eternal husband. Her devotion was so intense that she rejected all other proposals from various Kings at that time.
When her brother Rukmi arranged her marriage with Shishupala against her will, Rukmini Devi did something unimaginable.
The Letter of Rukmini Devi
In complete humility and faith, Rukmini Devi sent a heartfelt letter to Lord Krishna through a trusted brahmana. In that letter, she expressed her deep devotion and pleaded with Krishna to come and accept her as His wife.
She wrote that if Krishna did not come, she would give up her life, as she could not imagine belonging to anyone else. Her words were filled with surrender, determination, and pure love.
This letter is often seen as the perfect example of total surrender to the Lord.
The Divine Abduction
Hearing her plea, Lord Krishna immediately set out to Vidarbha. On the day of her wedding, as Rukmini Devi went to the temple of Goddess Durga, Krishna arrived, lifted her onto His chariot, and carried her away in front of all the assembled kings.
This divine “abduction” was not an act of force, but a fulfilment of Rukmini Devi’s deepest desire, a loving reciprocation from the Lord to His pure devotee.
Krishna later defeated all opposing kings, including Rukmi, and married Rukmini Devi in a grand ceremony in Dwaraka.
The Ideal of Perfect Surrender
Rukmini Devi embodies the highest standard of devotion. Without ever seeing Lord Krishna, she developed deep and unwavering love for Him simply by hearing about His glories. Her faith in His protection never wavered, even in the face of great uncertainty. With complete trust and surrender, she accepted Him as the ultimate goal of her life.
