What is Purushottam Maas?
Purushottam Maas, also known as Adhik Maas, will be observed from 17th May 2026 to 15th June 2026. It is an extra lunar month that appears approximately once every three years to balance the lunar and solar calendars.
This sacred month is especially dedicated to Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Purushottam. During Purushottam Maas, devotees minimise unnecessary material engagements and focus more deeply on spiritual practices such as hearing about Krishna, chanting His holy names, reading scriptures, and performing devotional service with sincerity.
The Padma Purana glorifies this sacred month by stating that the month of Kartik is hundred times more powerful than ordinary months, while Purushottam Maas is one thousand times more spiritually powerful than Kartik. Scriptures also explain that sincere worship of Radha and Krishna during this month brings special spiritual blessings and helps one progress deeply in devotional life.
Why is Purushottam Maas important?
According to Vedic philosophy, every month has a predominating deity. The deity of this month was neglected by the other months and, feeling sorrowful, approached Lord Krishna for shelter. The Lord then blessed this month with His unparalleled mercy. Because of this, devotees consider Purushottam Maas one of the most auspicious times for spiritual advancement.
Thus, Lord Krishna and Purushottam Maas are deeply connected, and this month became especially dear to Him.
