Purushottam Adhik Maas 2026: Understanding the Tree of Material Existence

During this sacred Purushottam Maas, we are presenting a special 5-part series on Chapter 15 of Bhagavad Gita, Purushottam Yoga. In this part, we will understand verses 1-6.

Purushottam Maas Significance

Purushottam Maas, also known as Adhik Maas, appears once every three years and is considered especially dear to Lord Krishna. During this sacred month, devotees increase their spiritual practices and often read Chapter 15 of the Bhagavad Gita, Purushottama Yoga.

In this small series, we will try to understand this beautiful chapter in a simple and practical way.

The Tree of Material Existence

At the beginning of the chapter, Lord Krishna compares this material world to an upside-down banyan tree. Its roots are upwards and branches spread downward. Just as a tree reflected in water appears inverted, this material world is only a reflection of the original spiritual reality.

In this world, we often search for happiness, love, satisfaction, and peace, but end up feeling incomplete or frustrated. Why? Because we are searching for eternal things in a temporary place. A reflection of a mango cannot satisfy hunger, no matter how beautiful it appears. Similarly, this material world is only a perverted reflection of the spiritual world, and therefore cannot fully satisfy the soul.

Krishna explains that this tree keeps expanding through our desires, attachments, and actions. Human life is therefore a serious responsibility, because every action brings consequences. According to our karma, we continue taking different births and remain bound to the cycle of birth and death. Seeing this repeated struggle, an intelligent person naturally begins to ask: “How can I become free from this?”

Detachment Through Bhakti

So how do we become free from this entanglement?

Krishna explains that this deeply rooted tree must be cut with the weapon of detachment. Instead of endlessly trying to analyse every suffering and confusion of material life, Krishna encourages us to begin the process of Bhakti-yoga and move towards spiritual perfection.

This detachment develops naturally when we reconnect with Krishna through spiritual practices like chanting the Hare Krishna maha-mantra, reading Bhagavad Gita, and associating with devotees.

Krishna then describes His eternal spiritual abode, a place beyond darkness and temporary suffering. Most wonderfully, Krishna assures us that one who reaches that destination never returns again to the cycle of birth and death.

These verses beautifully remind us that real happiness lies not in temporary reflections, but in reconnecting with the eternal Supreme Lord.
