What is Pashankusha Ekadashi?

Pashankusha Ekadashi, also known as Papankusha Ekadashi, is observed on the eleventh day of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) in the month of Ashwin (September–October). This sacred day falls immediately after Vijayadashami and holds deep spiritual significance for all devotees of Lord Krishna.

The Glories of Pashankusha Ekadashi

The scriptures describe a sacred dialogue between Maharaj Yudhishthira and Lord Krishna, in which the Supreme Lord reveals the boundless glories of Pashankusha Ekadashi. Observing a fast and engaging in worship on this auspicious day washes off all sins and bestows both material prosperity and spiritual upliftment. Even offering a simple obeisance to Lord Vishnu on this day is said to yield the same merit as performing intense austerities and penances.

Lord Krishna further declares that worshiping Lord Padmanabha on Pashankusha Ekadashi brings one immense joy in this world and liberation in the next. The spiritual benefits of observing this Ekadashi are described as being equal to performing numerous fire sacrifices, doing holy pilgrimages, and engaging in other virtuous acts. Chanting the sacred names of the Lord on this day delivers one from the clutches of Yamaraja, the lord of death and ensures a place in Vishnuloka, the eternal abode of the Lord. Moreover, through sincere observance of this sacred day, even one’s forefathers attain liberation and reach the divine shelter of Vaikuntha. How to observe Pashankusha Ekadashi?

Devotees observe this Ekadashi through fasting, chanting, hearing Krishna-katha, and performing Archana Vidhi to Lord Padmanabha with offerings of Tulasi leaves. Engaging in the service of the Lord with devotion, along with acts of charity, fulfills the true spirit of this sacred vrata. Even the smallest act of charity on this day brings multiplied blessings, surpassing the fruits of performing countless yajnas. If offered sincerely and according to one’s ability, such a donation purifies the heart, uplifts one’s ancestors, and draws forth the mercy of Lord Vishnu.
