Parama Ekadashi 2026: Significance, Glories, and Observance

Parama Ekadashi is the sacred Ekadashi observed during the Krishna Paksha of Purushottam Adhik Maas. In the dialogue between Lord Sri Krishna and Maharaja Yudhishthira, as narrated in the Skanda Purana, Lord Krishna glorifies Parama Ekadashi as a sacred vrata that bestows both material prosperity and ultimate spiritual liberation.
Why is Parama Ekadashi important?
Parama Ekadashi occurs during the Purushottam Mass, the month especially dear to Lord Krishna. Because it appears during Purushottam Maas, the spiritual results obtained through devotional activities performed on this day are greatly multiplied. It is an opportunity for devotees to deepen their remembrance of Lord Hari, purify their consciousness, and strengthen their commitment to devotional service.
The Story of Parama Ekadashi
The Skanda Purana narrates the story of a pious brahmana named Sumedha and his devoted wife Pavitra, who lived in extreme poverty. Despite their hardships, they remined faithful and devoted to dharma. When the great sage Kaundinya Muni visited their home, he instructed them to observe Parama Ekadashi and the Pancharatrika vrata, a five-day vow of increased austerity and devotion during Purushottam Maas. By faithfully following these instructions, they attained prosperity and ultimately attained the eternal abode of Lord Vishnu.
Glories and Benefits of Observing Parama Ekadashi
The scriptures describe the observance of Parama Ekadashi as highly auspicious and spiritually rewarding. Lord Krishna states that this vrata bestows the necessities of life, removes miseries due to the past misdeeds, and grants liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The merit obtained is compared to visiting holy places such as the Ganga and Pushkara. Most importantly, Parama Ekadashi awakens devotion to Lord Krishna and brings one closer to His lotus feet.
How to Observe Parama Ekadashi?
Devotees observe fasting for Parama Ekadashi by fasting from grains, legumes, and pulses, while increasing their engagement in devotional practices such as chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, hearing Krishna-katha, worshipping Lord Krishna, and avoiding sinful activities. The scriptures also recommend performing charitable acts and rendering service to devotees on this auspicious day.
