Papamochani Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Chaitra (March–April). The word Papamochani means “that which frees one from sins.” By observing this sacred Ekadashi with faith and devotion, one is freed from all sinful reactions.
The glories of this Ekadashi were described by Lord Sri Krishna to Maharaja Yudhishthira, explaining that Papamochani Ekadashi has the power to grant spiritual purification.
Long ago, in a beautiful celestial forest, a young sage named Medhavi, the son of Chyavana Rishi, was performing severe austerities and penances. A heavenly dancer named Manjughosha, instructed by Kamadeva, distracted him from his spiritual practice, and he spent many years in her company.
When Medhavi later realized how much time had passed, he became upset and cursed Manjughosha to become a ghostly being. Upon her request for mercy, he advised her to observe Papamochani Ekadashi, explaining that it frees one from even greatest sins. By observing this Ekadashi, both Medhavi and Manjughosha were eventually purified.
Papamochani Ekadashi is a sacred opportunity to purify the heart and seek the mercy of the Lord. Devotees rise early in the morning, chant the holy names of Lord Krishna, and spend the day hearing and remembering His divine pastimes. Observing the fast by avoiding grains, pulses, and legumes helps keep the mind peaceful and focused on devotional service.
On Ekadashi, one can engage in various devotional activities, including offering Tulasi leaves to the Lord, preparing bhoga, performing deity worship, and joining kirtans. Acts of charity and serving others on this auspicious day further enhance the spiritual merit of observing this vrata.
