Padmini Ekadashi The Most Auspicious Ekadashi of Purushottam Maas

Padmini Ekadashi is the sacred Ekadashi that appears during the bright fortnight of Purushottam (Adhik) Maas. In the Skanda Purana, Lord Krishna explains its glories to Maharaja Yudhishthira, declaring it one of the most spiritually uplifting Ekadashis.

Why is Padmini Ekadashi important?

Lord Krishna states that Padmini Ekadashi is so powerful that even Lord Brahma cannot fully describe its glories. Fasting on this sacred day grants immense spiritual merit, destroys reactions of sinful activities, fulfills sincere desires, and helps one progress toward returning to the Lord’s eternal abode.

Padmini Ekadashi and Purushottam (Adhik) Mass

Padmini Ekadashi is special because it occurs during Purushottam Maas, the month especially dear to Lord Krishna. Hence, devotional activities performed on this day are considered especially auspicious and spiritually beneficial.

What is the story of Padmini Ekadashi?

The famous narration describes Queen Padmini and King Kartavirya, who desired a son. Following the instructions of Anasuya Devi, Queen Padmini observed this Ekadashi with deep faith and devotion. Pleased by her sincere observance, Lord Keshava appeared and blessed them with Kartavirya Arjuna, a mighty king known for his great strength, thousand arms, and victories over many rulers, who was later defeated by Lord Parashurama.

How should one observe Padmini Ekadashi?

Devotees observe the fast of Padmini Ekadashi by abstaining from grains, legumes, and pulses, chanting the holy names, worshipping Lord Krishna or Vishnu, hearing Hari-katha, and remaining absorbed in devotional service. During Purushottam Maas, devotees also read and hear Purushottama Yoga, Chapter 15 of the Bhagavad Gita, which glorifies Lord Krishna as the Supreme Person. Offering charity on such sacred days is also considered highly auspicious.
