Offering Food to Lord Krishna – The Significance of Krishna Prasadam
Preparing a Bhog Thali for Shri Krishna
Prasadam, meaning "mercy," refers to sanctified food that has been offered to Lord Krishna with devotion. In ISKCON and other Gaudiya Vaishnava traditions, devotees prepare pure vegetarian meals and offer them to the Lord before partaking. Once Krishna accepts the offering, it becomes maha-prasadam – divine remnants of the Lord’s meal.
Why Offer Food to Krishna?
Even vegetarian food carries karma due to the unintentional harm caused during farming or harvesting. But when that same food is offered to Lord Krishna with love and devotion, He purifies it completely. The offering becomes infused with spiritual energy, transforming into prasadam. Consuming prasadam helps us transcend material karma and make genuine spiritual progress. It is a powerful practice in bhakti-yoga and sharing it with others becomes an act of deep compassion and devotion.
What Can Be Offered to Krishna?
In the Bhagavad-gita, Krishna says:
"If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water, I will accept it."
Only vegetarian food—free from meat, fish, and eggs—should be offered to the Lord. Additionally, onions, garlic, and caffeine are avoided, as they can agitate the mind and hinder spiritual focus. It's best to use fresh, natural ingredients. When purchasing packaged items, carefully check the labels and avoid products containing animal-based rennet, gelatine, or hidden non-vegetarian additives listed under E-numbers or vague flavourings.
How to Prepare Food for Krishna
Cleanliness is essential—keep the kitchen and all utensils spotless. Since you are cooking for the Lord, refrain from tasting anything before it is offered to Him. The most important ingredients are love and devotion. Try to maintain a spiritual atmosphere while cooking by listening to devotional music or kirtans.
Offering Bhog to Krishna
Once the meal is ready, place a portion of each item on a clean plate reserved exclusively for Krishna. Include a cup of fresh water and place a Tulasi leaf on each preparation—Tulasi is dear to the Lord and symbolizes devotion.
Simple Offering for Beginners:
Chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra three times:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
For a More Elaborate Offering:
You may chant the following prayers three times each while gently ringing a bell. Offer the food through the parampara (disciplic succession), starting with Srila Prabhupada, the spiritual master.
1. Prayer to Srila Prabhupada
Transliteration:
nama om visnu-padaya krishna-presthaya bhutale,
srimate bhaktivedanta-swamin iti namine
namas te sarasvate deve gaura-vani-pracharine,
nirvishesha sunyavadi paschyatya desha tarine
Translation:
"I offer my respectful obeisances unto His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada, who is very dear to Lord Krishna, having taken shelter at His lotus feet. Our respectful obeisances are unto you, O spiritual master, servant of Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Goswami. You are kindly preaching the message of Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and delivering the western world from impersonalism and voidism."
2. Prayer to Lord Chaitanya
Transliteration:
namo maha-vadanyaya, krishna-prema-pradaya te
krishnaya krishna-chaitanya, namne gaura-twishe namah
Translation:
"O most merciful incarnation! You are Krishna Himself appearing as Shri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. You have accepted the golden hue of Srimati Radharani and are freely distributing pure love of Krishna. We offer our respectful obeisances unto You."
3. Prayer to Lord Krishna
Transliteration:
namo brahmanya-devaya go-brahmana-hitaya ca
jagad-dhitaya krishnaya govindaya namo namah
Translation:
"I offer my respectful obeisances to Lord Krishna, protector of the cows and the Brahmanas, benefactor of the entire universe. I bow repeatedly to Krishna, known as Govinda."
After the offering, allow a few minutes for the Lord to accept the food. Then, return the prasadam to its original containers.
Prayer Before Honoring Mahaprasadam
Before eating, devotees recite a prayer expressing gratitude for the Lord’s mercy:
maha-prasade govinde
nama-brahmani vaisnave
svalpa-punya-vatam rajan
visvaso naiva jayate
Translation:
"O King, for those who have very little pious credit, faith in maha-prasadam, in Govinda, in the Holy Name, and in the Vaishnavas never awakens."
A Beautiful Vaishnava Prayer Before Eating
sarira avidya-jal, jodendriya tahe kal,
jibe phele visaya-sagore
taar madhye jihva ati, lobhamoy sudurmati,
taake jeta kathina samsare
krsna baro doyamoy, karibare jihva jay,
swa-prasad-anna dilo bhai
sei annamrita khao, radha-krsna-guna gao,
preme dako caitanya-nitai
Translation:
"This body is a network of ignorance, and the senses are its traps, pulling the soul into the ocean of material enjoyment. Among them, the tongue is the most greedy and difficult to control. But Krishna is so merciful that He gives us His prasadam to conquer the tongue. So let us honors this nectar-like food, sing the glories of Radha-Krishna, and lovingly call out the names of Lord Chaitanya and Nityananda."
By preparing food with devotion and offering it to Krishna, we not only purify our diet but also align our daily activities with spiritual consciousness. Distribute and share prasadam whenever possible—sharing Krishna's mercy is one of the highest forms of services.
Hare Krishna!
