Observing Putrada / Vaikuntha Ekadashi

Putrada / Vaikuntha Ekadashi is observed during the Shukla Paksha of the Pausha month (December–January) and is one of the most spiritually potent Ekadashis described in the Bhavishya Purana. The word Putrada literally means “giver of a son.” this sacred day is especially observed by those seeking progeny, purity of heart, and elevation in spiritual consciousness. Lord Shri Krishna Himself narrates the glories of this Ekadashi to Maharaj Yudhishthira, highlighting its immense power to destroy sins and grant both material and spiritual fulfillment.

Significance and Story of Putrada / Vaikuntha Ekadashi

The worshipable Deity of Putrada Ekadashi is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Shri Narayana. Among all beings, moving and non-moving, across the lower, middle, and higher planetary systems, there is no personality superior to Him. By observing this Ekadashi with sincerity and faith, a devotee pleases Lord Narayana and receives His causeless mercy. Scriptures declare that Putrada Ekadashi removes all kinds of sins, makes one learned and renowned, and elevates the soul to the spiritual abode. It is especially powerful for those desiring progeny, as faithful observance grants a virtuous son, fame, knowledge, and ultimately liberation after death.

The Bhavishya Purana narrates the story of King Suketumaan of Bhadraavati and his queen Shaibyaa, who suffered immense sorrow due to the absence of a son. Despite performing fire sacrifices, charity to brahmins, and devotional worship, the king remained restless and grief-stricken. Fearing the end of his dynasty and the inability to repay debts to forefathers, devas, and society, he eventually left his kingdom and wandered into a dense forest. There, he encountered a beautiful lotus lake resembling Manasarovar, near which great sages were chanting the holy names of the Lord. Auspicious signs appeared, and the sages revealed themselves as the Ten Vishvadevas. They informed the king that the day was Putrada Ekadashi and advised him to observe the vrata with devotion.

Following their instruction, King Suketumaan strictly observed Putrada Ekadashi and broke his fast on Dvadashi, offering his obeisances. By the mercy of Lord Keshava and the blessings of the Vishvadevas, Queen Shaibyaa conceived, and a bright, noble son was born, who later became a righteous and heroic ruler.

Lord Shri Krishna concludes by declaring that even hearing or reading the glories of Putrada Ekadashi grants merit equal to performing a great fire sacrifice, and that this Ekadashi is described for the benefit of all humanity.

Putrada / Vaikuntha Ekadashi will be observed on 31st December 2025, with Dvadashi fast breaking on 1st January 2026. The fast-breaking time in Mumbai is from 07:12 am to 10:52 am.
