What is Nirjala Ekadashi?
Nirjala Ekadashi is one of the most sacred and spiritually rewarding Ekadashis observed in the Vedic tradition. The word Nirjala literally means “without water,” referring to the strict fast observed on this day, during which devotees abstain from both food and water. This austerity is undertaken to please the Supreme Lord, deepen one's devotion, and advance in spiritual life. Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi or Pandava Ekadashi, as its observance is connected with the pastime of Bhima and the Pandavas, which we will discuss later in this article.
Why is Nirjala Ekadashi Important?
Among all the Ekadashis, Nirjala Ekadashi is considered especially important as observing this Ekadashi is gives the merits of observing all the Ekadashis throughout the year. It is a day dedicated to increased chanting, prayer, hearing Krishna-katha, and devotional service.
The Story of Nirjala Ekadashi
The glories of Nirjala Ekadashi are described in the Brahma-vaivarta Purana. Bhimasena, the most powerful among the Pandavas, found it difficult to fast twice every month like the other members of his family due to his large appetite. To find a solution, he approached Srila Vyasadeva.
Understanding Bhima’s situation, Vyasadeva instructed him to observe a strict fast, abstaining from both food and water, on the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight in the month of Jyeshtha. By faithfully observing this Varta, Bhima could obtain the spiritual benefits of all the Ekadashis throughout the year. Because Bhima observed this sacred vow, it came to be known as Bhimseni Ekadashi and is also celebrated as Pandava Ekadashi.

Nirjala Ekadashi Fasting Rules and Observance
Traditionally, devotees observe Nirjala Ekadashi by fasting completely, abstaining from both food and water until the Parana time on Dvadashi. However, one may fast according to one’s health and capacity. If needed, liquids such as milk, buttermilk, curd, or fruit juices may be taken. In all cases, grains, legumes, and pulses should be avoided on Ekadashi.
The essence of Ekadashi is to increase one's Krishna consciousness by engaging in devotional activities such as chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra, reading scriptures, hearing Krishna Katha, visiting the temple, participating in Harinaam Sankirtan, and serving the Lord through offerings, garlands, and flower arrangements.
Charity on Ekadashi is especially auspicious. Supporting Annadaan, Vidyadaan, Deity worship, and other temple services helps purify the heart and deepen devotion. We humbly invite you to contribute towards these services on Nirjala Ekadashi. Please visit : https://www.iskconbhiwandi.org/annadaan
