The Significance of Vijayadashami

Vijayadashami, also known as Ramachandra Vijayotsava, is celebrated as the victory of Lord Rama over the mighty demon king Ravana. The tenth day of the bright half of the month of Ashvina (September/October) marks the celebration of this festival. This day symbolizes the triumph of Good over evil and serves as a reminder for devotees to reflect on and apply the eternal principles taught by Lord Rama, and His divine associates.

Lord Rama, whose very name means “the one who gives pleasure,” is remembered not only for His supreme strength but also for His gentle, simple, and virtuous character. Thousands of years after His pastimes, people still honour and learn from His life because of these qualities. The teachings of Lord Rama extend beyond His personal virtues, encompassing the selfless surrender of Lakshmana, the devotion of Hanuman, the fraternal love of Bharat, and the servitorship of Shatrughna.

The Lord has established certain laws for the proper functioning of the world. When someone violates these laws and causes harm on a large scale, the Lord appears to protect the innocent and restore order. As described in the Bhagavad Gita (4.7), whenever there is a decline in religious principles and an increase in irreligion, the Lord descends to re-establish dharma. On Vijayadashami, this divine purpose is vividly manifested as the Lord defeats Ravana and restores dharma.

The Lord’s Glorious Victory

Lord Rama, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared in Ayodhya as the son of King Dasharatha to uphold dharma and give joy to His devotees. In His youth He protected the sages in the forest from troubling demons and delighted the hearts of His devotees with His compassion. Accepting exile, He lived in the forest with Mother Sita and Lakshmana, where He continued His divine pastimes. It was then that Ravana, who had a sinful history of harassing many women, deceitfully abducted Mother Sita, setting the stage for the great war to come. The battle between Lord Rama and Ravana was a display of unmatched courage and divine power. Ravana, the mighty demon king, fought fiercely, using celestial weapons, illusions, and even mountains to crush Rama and his army. Many of Ravana’s sons and warriors were killed, and at one point Lakshmana was struck unconscious by Indrajit’s powerful arrow, only to be revived with the Sanjivani herb. Ravana even regrew his severed heads, showing his incredible strength, yet Rama remained calm and fearless, countering every attack with perfect precision. The sky darkened, the earth trembled, and the clash of weapons filled the battlefield with fear and awe. Finally, Rama released the supreme Brahmastra arrow, which pierced Ravana’s heart and ended his life, bringing victory to dharma. This battle proved that no matter how mighty evil may be, it cannot withstand the divine power and righteousness of Lord Rama.

Vijayadashami reminds us not only of Lord Rama’s triumph over Ravana but also of the timeless values He stood for like, truth, compassion, devotion, and courage. It is a day to reflect on these qualities and strive to embody them in our own lives. One of the most meaningful ways to observe this sacred day is through sincere spiritual practices- chanting the holy names of the Lord, singing bhajans in glorification of Lord Rama, reading from the Ramayana, and hearing the divine pastimes through discourses. Acts of kindness and charity offered on this day are especially auspicious and bring spiritual merit.
