Hare Krishna Mahamantra (हरे कृष्ण महामंत्र)
The Great Chant for Spiritual Awakening
Hare Krishna Maha Mantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare
हरे कृष्ण हरे कृष्ण, कृष्ण कृष्ण हरे हरे ।
हरे राम हरे राम, राम राम हरे हरे ।।
Meaning of the Maha-Mantra
The Maha Mantra consists of three sacred names: Hare, Krishna, and Rama.
Hare – A powerful invocation of the divine energy of the Lord, primarily referring to Srimati Radharani, the eternal consort of Lord Krishna.
Krishna – The name of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who possesses all divine qualities in unlimited measure.
Rama – Refers to the reservoir of all pleasure and also alludes to Lord Rama, another form of the Lord.
By chanting this mantra with sincerity and love, one connects to the divine energy of Krishna and Radha, accessing spiritual bliss and inner peace. The mantra is a spiritual call, a heartfelt plea for divine connection, protection, and service.
While engaging in nama-sankirtana (the congregational chanting of the holy names), one should chant with deep feeling, unshakable faith, and the awareness that Radha and Krishna are personally present in the holy name, along with all Their divine qualities and pastimes. Such chanting leads the soul to the ultimate goal – Krishna-prema, or pure love of God.
Purport by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada
The chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra is not a mere ritual or cultural tradition. It is the sublime process of reviving our original Krishna consciousness.
We are all originally spiritual beings, eternally connected to Krishna. But due to our association with the material world over countless lifetimes, our consciousness has become covered by illusion (maya). This illusion makes us believe we are the enjoyers and controllers of this world, while in truth, we are under the strict laws of material nature.
This unnatural struggle with nature traps us in the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra cuts through this illusion and helps us reconnect with our original spiritual identity. It revives the soul’s dormant love for God.
This process is especially recommended for the current age (Kali Yuga) by all spiritual authorities. Unlike other spiritual practices that may require strict qualifications or deep intellectual understanding, the maha-mantra is accessible to all, regardless of background, age, or status. Even children, and in some cases animals, have responded to the divine vibration of the holy names.
When chanted sincerely, especially when heard from the lips of a pure devotee, the mantra has a powerful and immediate purifying effect. However, chanting heard from a non-devotee should be avoided, as it may lack the necessary spiritual potency. As the saying goes, "milk touched by the lips of a serpent becomes poisonous."
The Spiritual Power of the Holy Names
The words Hare, Krishna, and Rama are not ordinary sounds. They are spiritual seeds, fully potent to awaken divine consciousness.
Hare is the vocative form of Hara, the internal spiritual energy of the Lord (Srimati Radharani), who brings the soul back to Krishna.
Krishna and Rama are names of the Lord Himself, full of sweetness and bliss.
The mantra is a sincere call to the Lord and His energy for protection, purification, and spiritual upliftment. Just as a child instinctively cries out for its mother, the soul naturally cries out for Krishna through this mantra. Mother Hara (Radha) then helps the devotee receive the mercy of Hari (Krishna).
By chanting this mantra with a clean heart and sincere intention, the Lord gradually reveals Himself, and the devotee experiences increasing levels of joy, peace, and divine love.
Why Chant the Hare Krishna Mantra?
It cleanses the heart of all misgivings and impurities.
It connects the soul with Krishna, the source of all pleasure.
It leads to spiritual ecstasy, beyond the mind, intellect, and senses.
It requires no prior qualification—anyone, anywhere, can chant.
It is the most effective method of self-realization in this age.
In this age of distraction, stress, and confusion, the Hare Krishna Maha Mantra stands as the most powerful spiritual tool for awakening our dormant love for God. It is simple yet profound, accessible yet deeply transformational.
By regularly chanting:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama, Rama Rama Hare Hare
We can reconnect with our true spiritual essence, overcome material miseries, and ultimately attain the eternal shelter of Lord Krishna’s lotus feet.
Chant and be happy.
Hare Krishna!
