Anasuyakah: The Absence of Envy in Lord Rama

As our discussion on the divine qualities of Lord Rama continues, we now come to a quality that is rarely found in its pure form—Anasūyakaḥ, being completely free from envy.

Envy often arises when something we consider rightfully ours is given to someone else. It disturbs the mind and affects relationships.

In the Valmiki Ramayana, we see a striking example of the complete absence of this tendency.

When the arrangement was made for Bharata to be crowned king, it came at the cost of Lord Rama’s rightful position and led to His exile. Yet, in this situation, Lord Rama showed no resentment—neither towards Bharata nor towards the circumstances.

Instead, He accepted the decision peacefully and remained affectionate towards Bharata. There was no trace of comparison or bitterness in His heart.

This is the essence of Anasūyakaḥ—to remain free from envy, even when faced with situations that could easily provoke it.

By applying the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita in one’s life, and living with devotion while understanding the Lord’s arrangement, the tendency towards envy gradually diminishes. Through bhakti, the heart becomes purified, and one learns to appreciate others without feeling disturbed by their position or fortune.

The episode of Bharata’s coronation and Lord Rama’s exile clearly reveals that there is no trace of envy in Him, and His conduct remains steady and unchanged throughout.
